News Update No 35

December 2014

Christmas Greetings and all good wishes for the New Year!

Our December film is Philomena, a British-French-American drama film starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan.

Philomena is being shown in The Corn Exchange on Friday 26th December 2014 at 7.30pm and Saturday 27th December 2014 at 7.30pm.

The film is based on the book 'The Lost Child of Philomena Lee' by journalist Martin Sixsmith. Starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, it tells the true story of Philomena Lee's 50-year-long search for her son.

Journalist Martin Sixsmith has lost his job as a Labour government adviser, and is contemplating writing a book. He is approached at a party by the daughter of Philomena Lee. She suggests that he write a story about her mother, who was forced to give up her baby boy, Anthony, fifty years ago. Although he initially scorns the idea of writing a human interest story, he eventually meets with Philomena and after hearing her shocking story, he decides to investigate further.

Philomena received critical acclaim from reviewers upon release: "Based on a powerful true story and led by note-perfect performances from Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, Philomena offers a profoundly affecting drama for adult filmgoers of all ages."

The film has been recognised by several international film awards. Coogan and Jeff Pope won Best Screenplay after it was screened at the 70th Venice International Film Festival. It was also awarded the People's Choice Award Runner-Up prize at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

The film was nominated in four categories at the 86th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Dench, Best Adapted Screenplay for Coogan and Pope, and Best Original Score for Desplat. It was also nominated for four BAFTA Awards and three Golden Globes.

About Us

Biggar Little Cinema was founded in February 2011, and is run as a community cinema on a non-profit basis.

As a not-for-profit organisation, our aim is to disburse all the surplus from our screenings as charitable donations, to local organisations and Rotary projects.

We also aim to provide the opportunity for members of an isolated rural community to enjoy good films without having to make a round trip of 60 miles or more to the commercial cinema.

Our films are shown in high-resolution digital quality, and projected using the latest digital equipment on to a full-size cinema screen. To match the exceptional quality of our picture, our sound is Dolby stereo using high definition loudspeakers. The Corn Exchange is well-known as an excellent venue, with very comfortable cinema-style seating and a cosy atmosphere. A full bar is available both before and after each screening, with a lounge area for relaxing and chatting with friends. All in all, Biggar Little Cinema offers a perfect location - and all proceeds go to support local organisations and Rotary projects.
