Dear Member

Thank you to you all who supported our two night showing of The King's Speech. It certainly was a great success, with a full house on the Friday evening, and only a very few seats vacant on the Saturday. Momentum Pictures, the producers of the film, very kindly agreed to waive their licence fee for the Friday showing, effectively adding £120 to the amount raised.

We had previously agreed that the proceeds from our performances would go to the Biggar Museum Trust, and, thanks to the support of members and non-members alike, we are able to make a donation of £1,000 to assist the Trust in its purchase of the site on the High Street.

Our next film is Unstoppable, based on the true story of the CSX 8888 Incident in 2001, where a train carrying a cargo of toxic chemicals ran through North-Western Ohio with nobody at the controls. The film stars Denzel Washington and Chris Pine as railroad employees who attempt to stop the runaway train.

Unstoppable was directed in 2010 by Tony Scott, who also Directed Man on Fire in 2004 and The Taking of Pelham 123 in 2009. This Oscar-nominated film is undoubtedly an action movie, but is also a political allegory about an economy out of control and industries that are weakened by layoffs, under-staffing and corporate callousness.

Unstoppable is being shown in The Corn Exchange at 7.30pm on Saturday 25th June 2011.

Admission for non-members is £6, with tickets available from Brydens Newsagents from this Friday, 3rd June, and at the door on 25th June, subject to availabilty.
