Our Christmas Film - The Lion King - Cert U

Our next film is Disney's The Lion King, originally released in 1994, and re-released in 2011. The combination of Disney's animation and songs by Tim Rice and Elton John made the film the year's most successful release, and the highest-grossing hand-drawn animated feature film of all time. The stage musical based on the film debuted in the West End's Lyceum Theatre in October 1999 and is still running.

The Lion King won two Academy Awards, for Best Original Score, by Hans Zimmer, and Best Original Song with "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" by Elton John and Tim Rice. It also won two Golden Globes, for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Original Score.

The matinee performance of The Lion King is in The Corn Exchange on Thursday 29th December 2011 at 2.30pm, and the second screening is on Friday 30th December 2011 at 7.30pm. It's for kids of all ages!

Admission is £6 for adults and £3 for 12 years and under. Tickets are available from Brydens Newsagents and at the door on the evening, subject to availabilty.

What happened to The Jungle Book?

We were sorry to learn that the Walt Disney Company had taken the decision to withdraw screening licences for The Jungle Book, which was our original choice for our Christmas film this year. It appears that the film is to be re-released in commercial cinemas, and so, in advance of this, existing licences, including ours, were cancelled, and we were told that we may not show the film.

When we were informed of this decision, we made strenuous efforts to convince the company that our screening of The Jungle Book would not damage the success of its commercial release. We made it clear that we had widely advertised our screening, had printed membership cards, had purchased the film and been involved in other expense. We stressed that all surplus income from our performances went to good causes. However, the company's licensors were unable to assist.

On the basis that The Jungle Book is a much-loved musical cartoon classic, we thought long and hard about an alternative, and chose The Lion King.

Perhaps we will be allowed to show The Jungle Book one day. With big company politics, who knows .....

Our 2011/12 Season

By popular demand, we are having two screenings of each of our films, each being shown on two consecutive dates. Please click here to see details of our films for the full season.

Biggar Little Cinema was founded in February 2011, and is run as a community cinema on a non-profit basis.

As a not-for-profit organisation, our aim is to disburse all the surplus from our screenings as charitable donations, to Rotary projects and local organisations.

We also aim to provide the opportunity for members of an isolated rural community to enjoy good films without having to make a round trip of 60 miles or more to the commercial cinema.
